I've been asked a few times why we don't use Slack for communication in our tech business. The answer is: because it encourages practices that I want to avoid. There's often an expectation with these instant messaging products that everyone should be able to be reached at any time. It feels like everything is urgent and that you should apologise for not responding to a message right away. Not to mention, it's easy to lose important messages among hundreds of others.I much prefer thread-based tools like Discourse, Twist or Zulip. Allowing for effective, thoughtful discussions where everything is nicely organised and searchable. It becomes an asset that can be searched and referenced in the future and serves as our knowledge base. This suits us far better.Be mindful with the tools you choose in business. It can have a bigger influence than you think, potentially even shaping your culture.

It's a glorified slot machine and people can't help but check it. How does work yet done when people check it every 7 minutes?

Still wanna send out that email? 🤔 Slack and OnePoll surveyed 8,000 small-business workers in the U.S. and U.K.There's some pretty mind-boggling results. 🤯 -Employees are spending almost 11 hours a week writing emails, many of which aren’t even getting read.-57% of respondents reported not reading emails with 8+ sentences.-46% believe that using email means their company is lagging behind with technology. If these stats represent internal emails (from known senders), can you imagine what things look like for cold outbound lately? 😱 Even as AI tools begin to increase productivity and replace manual and repetitive tasks, where does that leave us regarding emails being read? 📉 Slack is leveraging this shift to add value to their platform. What other methods of communication can we expect to see?

At Fairwinds we default to public Slack channels. There are so many great benefits, but for me it's about #transparency and modeling. We pride ourselves on making sure the entire organization understands how the business operates - that includes a lot motions:- All hands where we review financials- P&L trainings for #leadership- A for-real open door policy all the way up and down the org- Answering questions clearly and directly, even if the answer is 'I don't know' or 'I can't share that with you'- Pushing as much of our discussions as possible into public Slack channelsThe modeling piece can be tricky (and it requires deep trust and #psychologicalsafety) but it is so worth it. Leadership disagrees in public -Andy Suderman and I sometimes will move a disagreement to a public channel deliberately. We ask 'stupid' questions in public. We are wrong in public. We own it.That results in a business that is less interested in who broke it than how we can fix it together. Folks are willing to ask the hard questions. They're willing to disagree and discuss opportunities and challenges from different POVs. Folks are invested in our outcomes and how their contributions fit into the bigger picture... because they can see the day-to-day of it.It was a big shift for me, but now I can't unsee the benefits. h/t Dan Moore for the article.

This week, in the spirit of thinking outside the box I ran a focus group in Slack. It was an experiment, the result of a unique situation with one of my clients. The participants were 50% in-person and 50% online. The in-person participants were spread across many rooms in a large building. We only had 30 minutes! They were all familiar with Slack. So, text based Slack it was! Here is how we tackled it: To ensure a confidential conversation, I set up a private Slack channel and invited them all to it. My client Zoom’d me in to everyone for 5 minutes ahead of time so I could say “Hi” , and they could see my face; I became a human rather than a disembodied keyboarder (or heaven forbid an AI). Then we all shifted over to the Slack channel.Things that went well: people participated and shared their perspective. That’s what a focus group is all about so I’m both pleased and relieved. I was able to download the conversation afterwards for review and analysis.Note that you have to be the channel owner to download the conversation.Things that could have gone better: 30 minutes is just not enough time. Even when people know each other, it takes time for them to get acclimated and start interacting with one another. I knew that going in, but now I have evidence. We got through all my planned questions (it was a very small number) but I had to end the conversation just as it felt like people were getting warmed up.What I learned from this experiment was that, although not ideal, a Slack focus group can work. Next time, if there is a next time, I will strongly advocate for an hour. I will also investigate ways to break Slack’s inherently linear conversation format. Has anyone else run a focus group in Slack? What worked well or not so well?
