Our new go to! Absolutely delicious! Moist and perfectly sweet. Since I didn’t have sprinkles, I used mini chocolate chips. My kiddo lamented that her mug cakes never taste good compared to this recipe. Thanks for sharing this scrumptious snack fix!

I made the poor mama version of this with oil and water, without sprinkles and it was still great! Very good recipe. Like others said, mine took closer to 2 minutes to cook, but everyone’s microwave is different.

I feel like sprinkles is optional, because I didn’t have them available in my kitchen. And I used oat milk because I’m lactose intolerant. But IT WAS SO GOOD. It was a great little treat to satisfy my sweet tooth. I doubled the recipe for my little sister to try it as well, she seemed to love it. I added frosting and my own spin to if, but it was so tasty! Definitely a repeat for a midnight snack perhaps? Anyways, your recipe was delicious! Great recipe, must try!

I had to make some adjustments to use what I had and the results were amazing!! I sub the vanilla with almond (found the vanilla afterwards), added a tsp of high quality cocoa, and I only had self rising flour so I left it the salt and baking powder. 70 seconds then an additional 10 seconds did it. I think I will experiment with lemon extract next time. This was my first mug cake from scratch! I’m sold,.. Thanks for the inspiration!!! I love that no egg is needed.

FAQs

Why is my mug cake not fluffy? ›

This is likely because your mug is too small, or you added too much baking powder. Measure accurately and make sure your mug is at least 10oz in volume. Why is my chocolate mug cake rubbery or dry? A rubbery mug cake is indicative of being overcooked, or incorrect measurements.

Do you put eggs in mug cake? ›

So for a single-serving mug cake, just skip the egg; a whole egg will overpower the small amount of batter (and it's pretty tough to divide an egg in quarters). Luckily, you don't need the egg—a pinch of baking powder is enough to help the batter rise up the sides of the mug.

Why is my mug cake hard? ›

Make sure you are using the flour as well as the eggs that are at room temperature. Warm, the better so that you can blend the mixture easily. If you use eggs right from the refrigerator, it may shift the coolness into the batter itself. This can make your cake hard and stiff.

Can you bake a cake in a ceramic mug? ›

Yes, as long as the mug is oven-proof. They were called cup cakes because, first, they were made with the cup as a unit of measurement, instead of the pound, as in pound cake. Then second, for fun, as a play on words, a cup-cake could be baked in a cup.

Is it OK to microwave cake? ›

It's a common myth that you can't bake a cake using a non-convection microwave oven. It really just comes down to having a microwave-safe pan, and that's easy peasy!

Which microwave mode for cake? ›

Convection microwave is great for grilling, baking, roasting, browning and crisping foods. For baking a cake, press the convection button, set temperature to 160 C , set the time for 20 minutes and press 'Start' again.

How do you know when a mug cake is done? ›

Cook each mug separately and remember they will continue to cook a touch more on standing, so I found 1 minute perfect for my mug-cakes. Touch the centre and if it's firm then your cakes are done. Try not to overcook these or they will go rubbery (the perils of the microwave!)

What makes cake very fluffy? ›

Introduction of Eggs into the Batter

Eggs alone can help make desserts like angel food cake light and fluffy without requiring leavening agents. The cake you make will determine how much beating eggs need. In a traditional yellow cake, you'd beat eggs individually into the batter for 1 minute each.

Why is my cake not cooked in the middle microwave? ›

It is happening because the power level is too high, causing steam to accumulate at the center too early in the cooking. Once the cake cools, the center collapses as it is still not cooked completely. Next time, reduce the power level one or two notches, and set cooking time to 20% more.

Why is my mug cake eggy? ›

You're not using the right number of eggs

Without eggs, cakes can be dry and flat. However, going overboard can also make the result too eggy, almost as if you created a sweetened omelet. That's probably not the kind of cake you're going for. Usually, just one small egg does the trick in a mug cake.

What can you substitute for egg yolk in mug cake? ›

The best substitutes for egg yolks
  1. Aquafaba.
  2. Silken tofu.
  3. Flax or chia seeds.
  4. Soda water.
  5. Vinegar and baking soda.

Why are mug cakes popular? ›

A mug cake offers a quick on-the-spot delicacy and is so simple you really don't even need a kitchen. So don't throw away your cake pans or your KitchenAid, but under the right circ*mstances, when it comes to cake, give your mug a shot.

What is mug cake made of? ›

Mix flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt together in a large microwave-safe mug; stir in milk, canola oil, water, and vanilla extract. Cook in the microwave until cake is done in the middle, about 1 minute 45 seconds.

Can I bake in a coffee mug? ›

Microwave and oven-safe coffee cups are designed to tolerate high temperatures. The specific heat resistance of each cup depends on the material it is made of. For example, ceramic and glass cups are known for their excellent heat resistance and can typically handle the temperatures of both microwave and oven.

How to bake a mug in the oven? ›

Place your mugs on a rimmed baking sheet (makes getting them in and out of the oven easier) and place them in a cold oven. Turn the oven on to 375 degrees and let it come to heat. Once preheated, let the mugs bake for 25 minutes. Turn the oven off, leaving the mugs inside, until it cools down.

How do you make a Betty Crocker mug? ›

Empty Cake Mix into microwave-safe 9- to 12-oz mug. Add 3 Tablespoons Water or Milk. Stir until cake mix is well blended, about 30 seconds. Microwave uncovered on High as directed below or until surface is mostly dry.
