Matt Sturniolo: Stay By My Side - Chapter 1 (2024)

Matt's POV

Nate and I were hanging out tonight, just the two of us. Nick and Chris were hanging out with us earlier, but they decided to go back home, so now it was just me and Nate. We went back to his house and played video games for a good hour, before we changed it up and started watching a movie. It was a good movie, it's been a while since I've just hung out with a friend without my brothers. I love them, don't give me wrong, but lately it's been nice doing some things without them. That doesn't mean I don't love them any less though.

After the movie ended, it was close to 12am and I needed to be getting home, I didn't drive here. Nate drove us, and he dropped Nick and Chris off at our house and then drove him and I here to his house. We walked out the front door, joking and laughing the whole way to the car. Once we were in the car, we talked about random things while we made our way to the house. I got on my phone and started scrolling through instagram the rest of the way.

Suddenly, I heard Nate's breath catch in his throat and I looked up to headlights on our side of the road, "Nate!" I screamed and he tried to jerk the wheel to the right to go into the emergency lane, but he didn't have time. The car in our lane hit us head on and I felt my seatbelt jerk me back in my seat as the airbags deployed and glass from the windshield fell across my lap. I felt something stab my throat and I gasped, trying to breathe, but couldn't. I groaned and coughed at the smoke coming from the deflating airbags. I closed my eyes feeling very dizzy, the force from the airbag hurting my head, I tried to take a deep breath, but I felt like I couldn't breathe. I was starting to panic and I reached up to my throat, feeling a thick piece of glass there. I moaned out from the pain in my head and side, as I looked over at Nate, he was unconscious. "Nate..." I mumbled, reaching out to try to shake him. I felt myself getting tired, I tried my best to stay awake, but I couldn't.

Caleb's POV (EMS)

We got a call from a head on collison, we were coming up on the wreck and I could tell from the cars damage that it was a terrible wreck. Me and my partner and captain walked over to the police for instructions. "Captain Anderson." He turned sround and nodded sharply. "The two in the SUV are fine, they are talking, but the man driving is drunk, and the wife is pretty tipsy herself. The two kids in the sedan on the other hand are both in rough shape, they're both teenagers and the driver, is finally conscious, his name is Nathan Doe and his friend in the passenger seat is Matthew Sturniolo. We talked to Nathan a little bit, but he's very out of it, and doesn't remember much from the wreck." I nodded, me and my team walking over the teenagers car. "Okay, Sierra you take care of Nathan, Caleb, you're with me, we're going to get Matthew out of the car and check his vitals."

I nodded and we walked over to the passenger side, his head was lolled to the side from being unconscious. I shook my head, telling myself that these kids were going to be okay. One of the firefighters were able to pry both of the doors open. I glanced at Sierra and she got the driver out and onto a stretcher. I pulled my attention back to the kid in front of me. Captain Layla and I got him out of the car and laid him down on the pavement to look him over. At first glance, he had glass sticking out of his collarbone, throat and few pieces had cut his face. "Captain-" "I know, we're gonna hope that it didn't pierce through his Larynx." I nodded and pushed his hair back a little, to find a bruise forming on his temple, I pursed my lips and checked his wrist for a pulse. I couldn't feel one, then I placed my stethoscope on his chest, "Captain, I have a heartbeat, but it's really slow!"

She nodded, "Don't lose it, don't let his heart stop. I think his leg is broken from the collision, we need to get him to the hospital fast." I nodded, I placed the pulse reader on his finger and we got him on the stretcher, pushing him to the ambulance.

Once we got on there, we hooked him up to an IV and placed a nasal cannula in his nose. I grabbed a syringe and a bottle of Propofol, feeding it through the IV. The dose I gave him will sedate him until we get him to the hospital. "What do we do about the glass?" Captain Layla looked over at me and then down at the teen. "We can't do anything for the glass in his throat. We try to remove it, we could make it worse and possibly cause heavy bleeding. I just hope that it isn't far enough in, that causes him damage to his throat." I nodded. I glanced at his vitals and they were still slow, but not as slow, from when we first found him. We got to work on removing the glass in his collarbone, and bandaging up the cuts on his cheek. Suddenly his pulse and heartbeat dropped, causing the moniter to drag out a long beep. "His heart stopped!" I climbed on the stretcher, straddling his lap as I placed the ball of my hand against his chest and started compressions. I pinched his nose and tipped his head back, placing my lips on his to breath into his mouth. I repeated that one more time. I heard Matthew starting to cough and heard the monitor beeping semi-normally now, I sighed out a breath of relief as Captain Layla switched out the nasal cannula for the oxygen mask.

Once we made it to the hospital, we looked in system for any emergency contacts and found 5, his family. The first two were, I assumed his brothers. They lived here in Los Angeles with him, while the other three were residing in Boston. Sierra looked over at me, "I can call one of them for you. I think the doctor needs your statement from the wreck." I nodded and gave her one of the numbers, while I walked over to the doctor to fill him in.

Nick's POV

I was currently sitting at the table in the kitchen, working on one of my diamond painting, with my airpods in, playing doja cat. My phone started ringing, canceling out my music. I glanced at the number, confused at who it was and why they would be calling me at 1:30 in the morning. "Hello?" "Hi, is this Nicolas Sturniolo?" "It is." "Hi, my name is Sierra Gutierrez, I'm with the Los Angeles hospital. I'm reaching out because your brother, Matthew Sturniolo was transported in from a collison scene and you are one of his emergency contacts." I froze in place, speechless. "Hello?" "He was in a wreck?" "Unfortunately, yes." She gave me the address and we hung up. I ran downstairs to Chris' room and told him what happened. We raced out the door in panic and called our mom and dad on the way there.
