Matt Sturniolo: Stay By My Side - Chapter 4 (2024)

Jimmy's POV

It's been two days now since Matt has woken up. They're wanting to take the tube out of his throat today. The doctor came into the room and gave Matt Propofol to sedate him for the surgery. Matt smiled softly at his brothers and then at me and Marylou. We watched as he slowly fell unconscious. We went out to the waiting room to wait for him. We knew the surgery wouldn't take long, since they were just removing the tube in his throat, though he would have a scar on his throat from the stitches. After about an hour the doctor came out to the waiting room and told us that the surgery went well and he was back in his room, and that he should wake up soon. It was late once the surgery was over, so I figured he would sleep through the night.

It was now the next day and Matt was awake, he was 'talking' with his whiteboard most of the day or resting. The doctor came into the room around 4:30 in the afternoon and cleared Matt to try to eat some light normal food. Most of the day the doctor and nurses came to check his vitals and his stitches. He was doing good and healing slowly.

Matt's POV

The next day I woke up and looked at the time, it was currently 10:07am. I looked around and seen Justin sitting in the chair on my left. He glanced up when he seen that I was wake and was reaching out to grab the whiteboard and expo pen. 'You guys let me sleep until 10?' Justin locked his phone screen and looked at me, smiling. "Yeah. You needed it, it's been a long few days for you." I nodded and erased what I had written and began writing another question. 'Where is everyone?' "Nick and Chris went to say bye to Nate, they ended up dicharging him this morning instead of last night. Dad and mom went and got breakfast for everyone, speaking of which, I need to text one of them and let them know you're awake and to get you something. They're at Mcdonald's, what do you want?" I thought for a second, 'A sausage biscuit. But can I even eat anything right now? With my throat and all?' Justin giggled a little.

"Matty, you lost your voice and yes, while your throat is healing, it's been four days, you should be fine. The doctor cleared you now normal food two days ago." I nodded, 'I'm just scared. I don't wanna make my throat worse and lose my voice forever..' he pursed his lips and moved from the chair to the side of the bed, sitting close to me. "I know you are. I would be scared too, but you'll be okay. It's a process, but I have no doubt in my mind that you'll be fine and you'll get your voice back." I nodded, tearing up a little. Justin seen the tears building and smiled, pulling me into a hug. After a few minutes we heard a knock on the door, then my doctor and someone walked in with him. "Hi Matt. I brought someone who wanted to check on you." I looked at the person who walked in with him. "Hi, you may not remember me, but my name is Caleb Jordans, I was the paramedic who assisted my Captain on the scene of the wreck. I was also the who... gave you... CPR."

I looked at him shocked for a second and then Justin spoke up, "Wait?! CPR?!! This is first we've heard about this." I was too shocked to even write anything out on my whiteboard. My heart stopped?? "I apologize that I did not inform you. My team chose not to say anything until you were healed enough, they didn't want to give you something to worry about while in your healing. If we had told you when you first woke up, you possibly would have been asking if your heart would stop again, and the answer to that is no." I nodded, and Justin looked at me and then back at the Paramedic and Doctor. "I just wanted to check to see if you were doing okay." I nodded and Dr. Mirani stepped and Justin followed him for more questions. Caleb started to walk out but I tapped my whiteboard and waved him over to me. I gestured to the side of the side. "You want me to sit on the bed with you?" I nodded and popped the cap off my expo pen. 'What was the scene like? How bad was I?'

I flipped the white board around to show him. He pursed his lips and looked down at the ground before slowly looking at me, "Let's just say that it was pretty bad. When we got there and walked to the passenger side of the car, I was hoping the whole time that you would make it out of this and you would be okay. We got you out of the car and I checked your pulse, I didn't feel one, then I check your heart and you barely had a heartbeat. Once we got on the Ambulance, you're heart slowed to the point that you flatlined. I did compressions on you and it didn't help, it got to the point that I did mouth to mouth to get some air in your lungs and after twice of doing that, we finally got a heartbeat." I nodded, I was scared that my heart would stop again, but he reassured me that I was going to be fine. "I also came in to talk to you for a minute. I wanted to tell you that I will be your physical therapist for your throat, I'm a part time paramedic and part time physical therapist."

I nodded and started to write on my whiteboard. 'When will I have physical therapy? What will happen?' He smiled softly. "It'll be okay, we'll take it slow and nothing bad will happen." I nodded again.
